Pupils Turn News Hounds Reporter asks: “So Trudi why are we at Silverdale Primary School today?” Trudi Barnard answers: “Because we are helping to devise the primary programme scheme to the year 4 class, which is eight to nine-year-olds.” Reporter asks: “How does the young enterprise scheme work and how is Newcastle Borough Council involved?” Trudi Barnard answers: “Well a series of modules will take the children from looking at them selves and important things like the need to save and teamwork in with the youngest ones in the reception class right through to the oldest ones who are ready to leave for secondary school and they are looking at our world big global issues and what we are here today is doing a module which is called our city and we use Newcastle, which is obviously our closest town, as an example and they do a whole variety of things.” Reporter asks: “And what will you be doing today specifically?” Trudi Barnard answers: “Right today we are going to be making our own community newspapers, it’s going to be breaking into groups and I’ve got some people along to help me, one of our journalists on the Reporter and also a producer from the community newspaper so we’re going to be looking at the sort of things that are really important for local people, what sort of news they need to include in the newspapers.” Reporter asks: “So why did Newcastle Borough Council decide to get involved and act as a volunteer?” Trudi Barnard answers: “Well I think it’s really important that these young people are given the best start in life that they can get so it is partially about raising aspirations. I know we are in the middle of an economic crisis at the moment but by the time these young people are in the world of work we’ll be out of it and we just want to make sure they understand the huge range of choices they’ve got to make for their futures.” Reporter asks: “Gordina why do you think it’s important to learn about business?” Pupil 1 answers: “Because when you get older if you want to do that business then you can learn more about it while you are younger and when you get older you can tell them about it.” Reporter asks: “Fantastic, so could you tell me together one after the other what you want to be when you grow up starting with you Lucy?” Pupil 2 answers: “A reporter or a teacher.” Reporter asks: “And what about you Gordina?” Pupil 1 answers: “I want to be a sub-editor or a reporter.”
