Recycling Service Gets Underway Reporter asks: “So Jane what does the Councils new recycling service involve?” Jane Finnemore answers: “Well it's involving lots of things the residents are already familiar with, so the Blue Boxes stay for the glass and the cans, blue bag stays for paper, and we're continuing with the textile collection in the bags. The new parts of the service are a green bag for cardboard that'll take any sort of cardboard at all torn to fit the bag and also a red bag for plastic bottles, all sorts of plastic bottles, washed and squashed and tied into the bag.” Reporter asks: “Why is the Councils new service being introduced and what are you hoping to achieve?” Jane Finnemore answers: “The service is being introduced really because residents are keen to have more recycling and the government target increases to rise. We have to be recycling 40% of our domestic waste within the Borough by 2010 and by 2020 that must be 50% so we've needed to introduce these new services to meet that target, but mainly because residents have been asking us for the last few years to introduce new materials like plastic bottles and cardboard and that's what we're pleased to be able to do now.” Reporter asks: “Over to you now Jonathan. What has been the residents reaction so far?” Scheme Supervisor answers: “The reaction has been really positive, residents, the first day of collection has seen a 50% increase in tonnage, which is really good hopefully we can see that continuing for the next two weeks, but really it's been very positive.” Reporter asks: “Great. OK so have you bought any new equipment to run this service?” Scheme Supervisor answers: “Yes we have. We've got five kerbsider vehicles and two seven and a half ton vehicles. The kerbsider vehicles have got like a side bin lift operation which means we can separate all the commodities, plastics, cans, cardboard, paper and the glass in separate compartments and also when they are tipping off in the future it's going to be a lot quicker when they are tipping off the materials and also the capacity of the vehicles is a lot bigger as well.” Reporter asks: “Yeah, so they don't have to stop off as much.” Scheme Supervisor answers: “No it's gonna mean we can get a lot more tonnage on the vehicle and the vehicles can stay out longer and service more routes.”
