The People’s Millions Reporter asks: “So Roger, what are we hoping to create here at the park?” Roger Tait answers: “Well what we are hoping to create is an innovative castle themed play area.” Reporter asks: “And how would we get funding for that project?” Roger Tait answers: “Well the opportunities come up through the Big Lottery fund People’s Millions programme, where they’ve invited expressions of interest for community projects to go forward and compete on a public vote for a grant of £50,000 towards the scheme.” Reporter asks: “And how would we get that £50,000?” Roger Tait answers: “Well they are going to televise the project on week beginning 23 November, so our project is going to be on Central News at 6pm on Monday, 23 November where we’ll be competing against another project from Wednesbury in the West Midlands and people will be invited to phone in and vote for the project you want to see receive the funding.” Reporter asks: “And how will people find out the phone number?” Roger Tait answers: “The phone number is going to be published in the Daily Mirror on Monday, 23 November and people will be allowed to vote from 9am on Monday 23 until 12 midnight that night.” Reporter asks: “So Lynne why do you think it would be necessary to have a play area here?” Head teacher answers: “There’s a lot of children in the area and the road is a mile long and it’s full of cul-de-sacs where little children live because they come to my school and other local schools and there is nowhere for them to play at the moment, there’s areas for the older children there’s the skateboard park but there isn’t anywhere for the little children to play when they’re not in school that’s safe and away from the road.” Reporter asks: “And what benefits do you think this play area will bring to your pupils and other children in the area?” Head teacher answers: “Well we are right next door to the castle mound, which is our Newcastle from the medieval times and the children can’t access that at all and the castle design that the children have chosen is just perfect so that they can find out about it educationally and also have a good time and relax there with their mums and dads.” Reporter asks: “So Bethany why do you think the play area would be a good thing for you and your friends?” Pupil 1 answers: “I think it would be a good idea because it would be a good opportunity for younger ages and also for me and my friends to learn about Newcastle’s past.” Reporter asks: “So Timothy why do you think this play area would be a good thing?” Pupil 2 answers: “Because it’s more safer for children, but not the skateboard park because the skateboard park is more like for teenagers except from children.” Reporter asks: “And would you be playing on here with your family?” Pupil 2 answers: “Yes.”
