The borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme has four leisure centres - in Newcastle town centre and at Knutton, Chesterton and Kidsgrove. Newcastle's Jubilee Pool has a large pool, featuring a water flume and inflatables, and a smaller training pool. The complex, popular with aduIts and children alike, also has Turkish steam rooms and a sauna and a Castle Gym fitness centre, which has recently undergone an extension and refurbishment. Numerous opportunities are available at Knutton Recreation Centre, near Newcastle. Outdoor facilities feature football, a bowling green and tennis. The centre also provides a Castle Gym and activities such as basketball, badminton and martial arts. Courses include judo, kick-boxing and dance. A health and well-being centre is due to open in Newcastle in 2011 and this will replace Jubilee Pool and Knutton Recreation Centre. Chesterton, to the north of Newcastle, also has a leisure centre. Chesterton Community Sports Centre is part of Chesterton Community College and is used by students and the public. The centre's Castle Gym is popular with residents of all ages and the pool is available to them in the evenings and at weekends. The sports hall is used for pursuits such as five-a-side football, netball and volleyball and classes including spinning. A sports centre is based at Kidsgrove, the borough's northernmost town. Kidsgrove Sports Centre is used by residents and students from Clough Hall Technology School. The centre's newest feature is a climbing wall. A range of activities include a large pool and teaching pool, a health centre with a sauna and steam room, a sports hall, a large outdoor AstroTurf and classes such as lifesaving, aqua-fit and step aerobics. The borough's sports development and community recreation service improves people’s health and fitness levels by encouraging them to take part in physical activity. Sports development officers give advice on funding and work with individuals, sports clubs and community groups. The council has also joined forces with NHS North Staffordshire to recruit health trainers, working to promote positive lifestyle changes. The Borough Museum and Art Gallery, set in parkland on the edge of Newcastle, has a wide range of features. The museum's main gallery is home to many exhibitions and other galleries depict the area's rich and diverse history. Highlights include a Victorian street scene and a toy gallery. Museum and arts officers carry out extensive work with schools and a programme of educational activities has been launched. Talks also go ahead at the museum.
