Oatcake video

Our reporter Simone:- so Trudi the town centre seems to have gone a bit oatcake mad today what’s going on?

Trudi:  well we have an oatcake festival and all sorts of oatcake related things going on but the best thing of all is the oatcake trail, where we have got over a dozen outlets in town that either make oatcakes or serve oatcakes and they are doing their wonderful special fillings they have all got signature fillings there is all sorts going on. It’s over Friday and Saturday and lets remind people that it’s a North Staffordshire thing the oatcake, so Newcastle has got as much right to it as anybody.

Simone: So what other events are actually going on as part of the festival then?

Trudi: Well on Friday we have had the special schools out doing the oatcake challenge which was a series of events and they have been learning how to work off their oatcakes they have all got wonderful oatcake medals for it, that’s Blackfriars and Aynsley schools have been here and then on Saturday we have got the Leopard Spot clog dancers and we have got a clown and a musical and all sorts of things lots of fun in the town centre especially in this beautiful sunshine.

Simone: It is certainly very nice. As Newcastle’s first ever oatcake festival where did the idea actually come from?

Trudi: Oh that’s a difficult one to say, we have got lots of oatcakes in town and we have got a manufacturer but I think it was just because it’s a partnership between the County and the Borough Council and the Chamber of Trade we all had a little hand in coming up with the idea, why not

Simone: So Tina have you come here specifically for the oatcake festival

Member of the public Tina: today,  yes we have. We saw it in the paper yesterday and we said we have got to go to Newcastle and check out the oatcake festival

Simone: Great! so what oatcakes have you sampled today and what was it like?

Tina: Actually so far we have had the Christmas one which was absolutely fantastic

Simone: What was in it then?

Tina: Chicken, bacon cranberry sauce and stuffing it was really really good

Simone: Amazing! so what’s next are you going to come back to taste any more?

Tina: actually what we have been doing is just getting one so we are going to go around and sample them decide what we like the best and probably come back tomorrow

Simone: Oh great! so the oatcake is the latest event designed to attract more people into Newcastle do you think that it is a good idea?

Tina: I think that it is a wonderful idea

Simone: why is that?

Tina: anything that promotes people to come into town, this is just something different so I think it would give people a reason to come in to town.
