Gender Equalities Scheme

This Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council Gender Equality Scheme is intended:

  • To eliminate discrimination and harassment; and
  • To promote equality of opportunity between men and women

The requirement to produce this Gender Equality Scheme originates in the Equality Act (2006) which placed a statutory duty on all public authorities to promote gender equality.  We welcome the Act and are fully committed to realising our aims with regard to gender equality across all our functions including those of an employer.  We are aware that the keys to making this Scheme work are:

Involvement; Leadership; Mainstreaming; Accountability; Expertise; Systems and Procedures.

This Scheme sets out our priorities and our action plan for the next three years.  We have consulted with Newcastle-under-Lyme residents and with staff to produce this Scheme and will continue to do so as we develop the Action Plan.  We are aiming to produce real outcomes and practical improvements to the lives of local people and our employees.

Significant support has been provided by the Staffordshire Equalities groups and its individual members Cannock Chase District Council, East Staffordshire Borough Council, Keele University, Lichfield District Council, South Staffordshire District Council, Stafford Borough Council, Staffordshire County Council, and Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service.

We would like to thank everyone who has assisted us in developing this Scheme.
