Exhibitions

The Museum & Art Gallery has three exhibition spaces; ‘The Main Gallery’, ‘The New Generation Space’ (formerly ‘The Hall Gallery’) and ‘The Gifted – Midlands’ Makers’ Gallery. The Main Gallery is the larger space, at approx 110m2, and hosts the main exhibitions. The New Generation space showcases the work of developing artists who have never exhibited as a solo artist previously and are seeking the opportunity to create new work (artists who are 14+ years).

On average the Main Gallery presents six exhibitions annually, the New Generation space five exhibitions and the Gifted Gallery presents the work of 10 – 16 artist / makers via four exhibitions.

The majority of exhibitions are supported by arts activities and workshops at the Museum. Public sessions are organised for adults and a programme of children's activities run during the school holidays.

Gallery Exhibitions

24 July – 5 September: ‘Telling Stories’

(Main Gallery)

This summer’s family-friendly exhibition promises to be a wonderful experience and visual spectacle for all members of the family. This year we have commissioned a number of artists and art organisations to produce artwork in response to some of the most popular children’s stories of all time. The Main Gallery will present five defined areas, each area recreating the world as depicted in each of the following stories:

CS Lewis / The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe;

Lewis Carroll / Alice in Wonderland;

J. M. Barrie / Peter Pan

Roald Dahl / Charlie & The Chocolate Factory.

So whether you take a wander through Narnia; help out in the Chocolate Factory or avoid the enormous 18 foot Crocodile from ‘Neverland’, this highly interactive exhibition promises a great few hours of fun for all our visitors.

Accompanying this exhibition, will be lots of fun trail activities, and things for the family to do, taking you around the exhibition and the Museum as a whole.

11 September – 7 November: ‘Ten Plus @ Newcastle under Lyme’

(Main Gallery)

This is an exhibition of contemporary textile art covering a wide variety of techniques and media, from fine hand and machine embroidery, patchwork, quilting and beadwork to handweaving, paper, collage and mixed media.

4 September – 6 November: ‘A Town in Stitch’, Anne Mychalkiw

(New Generation Space)

The exhibition presents a collection of textile pieces based on daily life in Newcastle; capturing the characters, the daily activities of local people, the traditions and the  architecture. The scenes and settings transformed into contemporary textile work, employing a combination of techniques such as transfer printing, stitching and dyeing.

The exhibition aspires to give an unexpected and refreshing view of Newcastle.

13 November – 24 December: 'Gifted' exhibition

(All galleries)

For the first time ever, we will be using all gallery spaces simultaneously to exhibit the work of 50 artist makers throughout the Museum (including the Main Gallery, Gifted Midlands’ Makers Gallery, Crafts Cabinet and New Generation space).

The exhibition continues on from the success of the ‘Gifted Midlands’ Makers Gallery’ which was launched in 2009, which aims to promote the work of artist makers from across the Midlands. Whilst this exhibition will be open to artists nationally, there will be an emphasis on artists from the Midlands. All artworks will be for sale.

On Saturday 4th December (11 – 4pm), a professional giftwrapping company will be on hand to giftwrap all bought artworks from the exhibition, for FREE.

From January 2010 the 'New Generation space' (formerly the Hall Gallery) will be specifically exhibiting the work of developing artists (from 14 years through to any age) who have not previously exhibited as a solo artist.

There will be four exhibition opportunities per year, with each exhibition slot being 10 weeks. We have simplified the application process for this space, with all application forms available from the Borough Museum & Art Gallery, or downloadable from the bottom of this webpage. We will also offer guidance on received exhibition proposals, given that we want to support those artists new to exhibiting their work.

The idea behind the 'New Generation Space' is to increase access to the Museum & Art Gallery for developing artists, whilst making the exhibition areas more defined for visitors. It comes also as part of a process of updating a number of the exhibition areas for art within the Museum & Art Gallery.

The New Generation space is modest but has many beautiful and interesting original architectural features.  It will present a rare opportunity to see the emerging talent for our region and will be crucial to nurturing the next generation of creative talent.
