Health and Wellbeing Centre

Exciting proposals for a £12 million Health and Wellbeing Centre in the heart of Newcastle are taking shape.

The scheme is being developed by Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council on land in Brunswick Street adjacent to the existing Jubilee Pool.

NHS North Staffordshire is working in partnership with the borough council on the project. Other partners include Sport England.

The 3D images on this page give you a glimpse into the future and show how the centre will look when it opens towards the end of 2011.

It will make a significant contribution to improving the health and wellbeing of the borough’s population and will be a central to our response to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

There is overwhelming support for the centre from residents, sports and community groups.

More than 1,000 people put forward their views as part of a major consultation programme for the Health and Wellbeing Centre and the vast majority were in favour of the scheme.

The new centre will consist of the following leisure facilities:-

  • 25-metre, eight lane swimming pool.
  • 12m x 10m training pool with moveable floor and aqua gym equipment
  • 12m climbing wall, 4m bouldering and traverse wall
  • Cafeteria
  • 90-station fitness centre
  • Interactive children’s activity zone
  • Health suite comprising sauna, steam and feature showers
  • 28m x 14m dance studio/multi-purpose room

Planning permission for the project was granted on 9 March 2010 and work is due to start on construction later in 2010.

The Wm Saunders Partnership – who are one of the country’s leading sports architecture companies – has been appointed to design the centre.

The building will certainly cater for people who want to stay fit and healthy as they enjoy a full range of high-class and quality activities.

But by working closely with colleagues from NHS North Staffordshire, we will ensure this is much more than a sports centre – we want it to be somewhere which contributes to the health and wellbeing of many of our residents.

On this part of the borough council’s website we will keep you up to date with news, information and developments involving the project.

We will also be running occasional online consultations to make sure we gauge your opinions over what is happening with the scheme and to check what your views are as the centre moves forward.
