Film Crew Visits Local Park

An ITV film crew will visit Newcastle as the borough council bids to win £50,000 lottery funding for a children's play area.

Central Tonight presenter Bob Warman and a team from the regional news show will be at Newcastle's Queen Elizabeth Park on 17 November to film representatives from the council and nearby St. Giles’ and St. George's Primary School.

A scheme to build the play area at the Orme Road site is one of eight projects bidding for Big Lottery funding.

The Newcastle bid will be featured on ITV's Central Tonight at 6pm on Monday, 23 November and viewers will be asked to vote by phone.

The park project will be up against an initiative from Wednesbury in the West Midlands and one of the two schemes will win a grant.

The "People's Millions" slot on the TV show will give a total of five schemes from the West and East Midlands the go-ahead.

Four initiatives will win in head-to-head contests over consecutive nights and a fifth scheme will also hit the jackpot if it's declared the runner-up with the most votes.

The park includes the site of the ruins of the 12th century castle that gave Newcastle its name and council officers have joined forces with St. Giles' and St. George's pupils to design the colourful castle-themed play area.

"We are delighted that we are going to be featured on Central Tonight,” said Cllr. Mary Maxfield, borough council Cabinet member for culture and active communities.

"Every vote will count on 23 November so we are urging all residents to get involved.

"The play area, for five to 12-year-olds, would provide opportunities for youngsters to have fun and learn about the history of our area."

The voting phone number will be published in the Daily Mirror and available on www.newcastle-staffs.gov.uk/peoplesmillions on 23 November.

Voting lines will open at 9am on the day and close at midnight.

People can register their e-mail address and phone number on www.newcastle-staffs.gov.uk/peoplesmillions so a reminder to vote can be sent out on the day.
