Part one: 30 September – November 25 2010
This course will explore the close relationship between the inhabitants of Newcastle and their gardens between 1750 and 1945. It will look at gardens in the centre of the town in the Georgian period; at the new gardens created for suburban residences in the Victorian period; at the rapid increase in the number of allotments worked by the occupiers of terrace houses in the 19th century; at the key role played by local nursery and seedsmen during this period; at the formation and activities of horticultural and flower societies in the borough; and at public gardens of every shape and size, including not only the Queen’s Gardens but also the garden worked by the inmates of Newcastle Workhouse.
The course will be divided into two parts. The first part will deal with gardens between 1750 and 1851; the second with gardens between 1852 and 1945.
