Cabinet Considers Public Toilets Review

A review of the borough's public toilets will be considered by the council's Cabinet when it meets on 17 February.

A package of measures is being recommended by officers in a bid to improve services and cut costs for Council Tax payers.

Improvements would include an enhanced service for the award-winning toilets in Hassell Street, Newcastle, where facilities would be available on Sundays, from 10am to 4pm, as well as on weekdays and Saturdays.

No changes are proposed at sites in Merrial Street, Newcastle, and Bradwell Lane, Porthill.

Plans to upgrade the toilet block in Heathcote Street, Kidsgrove, will also be considered, along with a possible scheme to improve the conveniences at Alexandra Road, WoIstanton.

Toilets at Liverpool Road, Kidsgrove, would close when the nearby Heathcote Street complex has been refurbished.

New toilets, including baby changing facilities, are now being built in Chesterton Park. When this work is complete, the block in a poor state of repair next to Chesterton Community Centre will not be open.

Toilets at Congleton Road, Butt Lane, not used for more than a year due to vandaIism, would not reopen and the conveniences in Northwood Lane, Clayton, also in a poor state of repair, would also not open.

“The aim of the proposals is to make sure that public conveniences continue to be provided in the areas of highest need and that we invest in improvements in key locations,” said CIIr. David Becket, Cabinet member for environment and recycling.

“They also provide an opportunity for the council to make a saving of £128,000 a year by revising current costs.”
