The history fans contributed to the fund to purchase Britain's biggest haul of Anglo-Saxon gold when they went to the museum to hear two talks about the hoard.
lan Wykes, from Staffordshire County Council, led the excavation of the treasure from land near Lichfield last July and shared his knowledge with museum visitors at the end of February.
The money raised came from ticket sales, donations and sales of a book on the hoard.
The £800 will go towards the campaign being run by The Art Fund to acquire the hoard for the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
A total of £3.3m needs to be raised by 17 April and the fund currently stands at over £1m.
“The talks we held here in Newcastle were a sell-out with 140 people attending,” said Cllr. Mary Maxfield, Cabinet member for culture and active communities.
“It’s marvellous that we are able to contribute £800 to the fund.”
The hoard comprises around 1,800 gold and silver objects including fittings from the hilts of swords, fragments from helmets and Christian crosses.
