Newcastle has connections to some important scientists and engineers.

Wolstanton resident Oliver Lodge was an eminent scientist. Noted for his involvement in the development of radio.  In 1894 Lodge demonstrated a radio wave detector in his Royal Institution Lecture. He was knighted for his achievements

November focus Reginald Mitchell was the famed inventor of the Spitfire aeroplane.

Born near Kidsgrove, Mitchell studied engineering and mathematics at night school. At the time he was an apprentice at an engineering works. In 1927 he became Technical Director at Supermarine. There he developed the world-famous aeroplane.

Mitchell's Spitfire became a famous emblem of World War II.
