Military matters
May’s focus is Major General Thomas Harrison.
Harrison was son of Newcastle mayor Richard Harrison.
He fought in many battles as a parliamentarian against the monarchy during The English Civil War (1642-1651).
Harrison was one of fifty-nine commissioners who signed the King’s death warrant. Following restoration of the monarchy in 1660 he was found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. Harrison was hung, drawn and quartered and his bravery in the face of death was noted by famous diarist Samuel Pepys.
Newcastle Victorian military barracks are still standing and now house a business centre. Endon born WWI poet T.E. Hulme attended school in the town and wrote a series of War Notes under the pen name ‘North Staffs’.
