Newcastle is the birthplace of modern circus via this month’s focus Philip Astley. Astley was the son of a cabinet maker with a genius for trick riding. He opened a riding school in London in 1769. His equestrian shows became well-known. They later expanded to include clowns, jugglers, tightrope walkers and dancing dogs.
We have other notable figures from the world of entertainment. Including singer-songwriter Jackie Trent. She composed songs for Petula Clark and the Neighbours’ theme tune. Also kit-man, clown and all-round local celebrity Nello (Neil Baldwin). Hero of the 2014 film Marvellous and world-class local theatre play, performed at the New Vic and now on at London's West End.
