Fascinating folk

Heroes

Coal mining is an important part of Newcastle’s industrial history. A dangerous occupation making heroes of everyday folk.

In 1937 there was an explosion at Holditch Colliery in Chesterton. The initial blast killed three men. During the rescue operation there was a second explosion. A further twenty seven died and eight men injured.

This month’s featured hero is Azariah (Ezra) Clarke. He was captain of the Holditch Colliery Rescue team. Clarke was awarded the Edward Medal for his bravery, later exchanged for the George Medal.

Many of Newcastle’s fascinating folk can also be considered heroes in their own right.
