Council Sets Out its Stall for Market Run by Young People

Young entrepreneurs can run their own market stall in the heart of Newcastle for just a fiver thanks to a national initiative.

The Council is organising a young traders market in Newcastle town centre for the first time as part of a competition run by the National Market Traders Federation (NMTF) to encourage more 16-30 year olds to consider incorporating market trading into their business model.

The outdoor market, which takes place on Saturday, 6 July from 10am to 3pm, will feature stalls offering arts and crafts, general retail items, groceries and street food. As well as selling goods, young people can also showcase a service, demonstrate a talent or perform a piece of work for free. This includes apprentices, or others, working in local businesses who are proud of what they do.

The NMTF is expanding the format of the contest so that local and regional markets nominate their winners. The best four traders in Newcastle on 6 July will be invited to trade on the regional market in Wolverhampton on Saturday, 10 August where one will be put forward to the final in Stratford-upon-Avon on 30 and 31 August.

Traders will be judged on the national scoring system which focuses on professionalism, sales skills, cleanliness, stock levels, unique selling point, quality, knowledge and pricing.

Cllr. Stephen Sweeney, Cabinet member for finance and efficiency, said: “The Council is delighted to be involved in this excellent competition. Markets are an ideal platform to launch a business – providing trading opportunities like this helps to nurture young talent and the next generation of market traders.

“The Council is currently taking a serious look at ways to breathe new life into Newcastle’s historic market. It’s recognised that attracting new traders, especially young ones, would bring a fresh injection of vibrancy to our high street. That’s why we’ll be offering further incentives to the young people after the event.”

People don’t have to live in Newcastle-under-Lyme to have a stall and insurance is available through a NMTF taster membership. For more information, visit www.newcastle-staffs.gov.uk/young-traders or contact the Council’s market supervisor on 07771 568172 or 01782 620519. The deadline for applications has been extended to midnight on Wednesday, 3 July.
