Five Arrested as Illegal Waste Dump is Secured
Five men have been arrested at an illegal waste dump in Keele.
Residents had reported activity at the site, near to Pepper Street and Hollywood Lane, and police were alerted.
Now the Borough Council and the emergency services as well as the Environment Agency, are working together to secure the site, make it safe and oversee the removal of the waste while a criminal investigation takes place.
It is estimated that there is between 200 and 300 bales of waste, up to 400 tonnes, on the site.
A contractor has been appointed by the owner to deal with the site security (this is on site 24hrs a day), the demolition of unsafe structures and removal of the waste.
Work is likely to begin next week.
Cllr. Ann Beech, Cabinet member for Operational Services, said: “The Borough Council’s environmental team is working closely with the site owner to clear the site and remove this illegal waste. We would like to thank residents for their vigilance and co-operation in raising the alarm about this issue which enabled the police, fire service, Borough Council and other agencies to act and stop this situation from escalating.”
