Judges on the way

Horticultural experts from a nationwide community and gardens campaign are all set to pay us a visit.

Judges from Heart of England in Bloom are touring gardens, parks and projects on Wednesday, 26 July as part of this year’s entry in the competition’s small city category.

The borough is aiming for a 16th consecutive gold award.

The Royal Horticultural Society’s theme is “Greening Grey Britain” which focuses on transforming hard and grey areas into living, planted places that enrich people’s lives.

Green-fingered residents, community groups, schoolchildren and Council staff are preparing to greet the judges and to show them around some of the horticultural highlights of the borough.

Cllr. Amelia Rout, Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “We are hoping for good weather next Wednesday so that the borough is seen at its best. We have so many community groups involved, including schools, businesses, sheltered accommodation, pubs, parish councils and, of course, residents - that we can’t wait.

“As always local businesses have really got behind the campaign and we are proud that all the Council’s ‘In Bloom’ activities are covered by sponsorship. It makes all the difference to get our local businesses on board. They tell us they are proud to support all the efforts to improve the environment for all of us, wherever we live in the borough.”

The judging programme is expected to take most of the day on Wednesday and the results will be announced in September.
