Landfill Working Party Stages Third Meeting

A council service’s role in relation to a landfill site in Silverdale is the next step of a scrutiny inquiry.

The scrutiny review working party is staging its third virtual meeting which is focusing on the legal responsibilities of Environmental Health and how officers have monitored and responded to complaints about Walleys Quarry Landfill.

The working party is looking into the site – which is operated by RED Industries RM Ltd and regulated by the Environment Agency – following a number of complaints to the Council about odours believed to be coming from the area. It has already heard from residents, community groups and local businesses followed by the Environment Agency.

The latest meeting takes place on Wednesday, 18 November at 7pm and is being broadcast live on YouTube. The agenda, and YouTube link, is available at https://bit.ly/35tGW64

Cllr. Andrew Fear, chair of the scrutiny review working party, said: “The Council has received many complaints about Walleys Quarry and our role is to investigate these further, with input from everyone who is involved in the site, in a fair and transparent way.

“The next stage is to hear from the Council’s environmental health department about its role. We’re well into the scrutiny process now and I’m very happy with how it’s progressing, especially in unprecedented times like these. It’s great to know from the viewing figures that people are taking a keen interest in this issue from the comfort of their own homes.”

It is planned to invite RED Industries to a further session. The working party will then carefully consider everything it has heard and is aiming to produce a report containing any recommendations it is able to make.

Residents who experience problems relating to Walleys Quarry can report issues online https://bit.ly/2FEaeVv or call the Council on 01782 717717 as well as the Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60.
