New Green Homes Grant Scheme is launched

A new scheme has been launched to help home-owners make their property greener and more sustainable.

The government’s Green Homes grant scheme will provide a voucher worth £5,000 or £10,000 to help cover the cost of making energy efficient improvements such as insulating your home to reduce your energy use, or installing low-carbon heating to lower the amount of carbon dioxide your home produces.

The government will provide a voucher that covers two-thirds of the cost of qualifying energy efficiency or low carbon heating improvements to your home. The maximum value of the voucher is £5,000.

If you are on a low income and receive certain benefits, however, you may be able to receive a voucher covering all of the cost of the improvements - up to a maximum of £10,000.

Cabinet member for energy efficiency, Cllr. Trevor Johnson, said: “This is a really fantastic scheme that could help many households in the borough make their homes more energy efficient.

“The substantial grant could make the difference between getting the work done – or not. I would encourage anyone who might be suitable for this scheme to apply.”

You can apply for the voucher from the end of September. In the meantime, home-owners can find out what improvements can be made as part of the scheme and use the time to obtain quotes from certified tradespeople.

To apply for the voucher, you must either own your home or be a private or social landlord (not eligible for the lower income grant). Your property must be in England.

More information about eligibility, measures that are included within the scheme, and how to apply can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-the-green-homes-grant-scheme

There is a time-limit set on getting the improvements made - the voucher must be redeemed and improvements completed by 31 March 2021.
