Newcastle’s sporting stars honoured

NEWCASTLE’S sporting champions young and old have been honoured during a special ceremony at Keele University.

Each year, the Newcastle Sports Awards recognise the achievements and outstanding contributions to sport of teams, individual sportspeople, volunteers and coaches throughout the Borough.

The 2017 winners were announced at Keele Hall, following Newcastle’s month-long Festival of Sport celebrations:

 

Junior Sportsman of the Year – sponsored by Keele University

Winner – Caleb Hill (cycling - Lyme Valley Racing Club)

Runner-up – Lucas Christer (powerchair football – St George’s Knights)  

 

Junior Sportswoman of the Year – sponsored by Staffs Cricket Board

Winner – Ilenia Sims (cricket – Porthill Park Cricket Club)

Runner-up – Olivia Moore (netball – Newcastle Town Netball Club)

 

Senior Sportsman of the Year – sponsored by Castle Sport

Winner – Adam Bradbury (volleyball – Newcastle (Staffs) Volleyball Club)

Runner-up – Andrew Woodvine (powerchair football – St George’s Knights)

 

Senior Sportswoman of the Year – sponsored by Staffs Fitness

Winner – Lucy Holt (athletics – City of Stoke-on-Trent Athletics Club)

The evening was hosted by Mark Thornewill, Chair of Castle Sport, who said: “These awards recognise the outstanding achievements of individuals and clubs in getting more people involved in sport, how sport can make a positive impact in our Borough and help to improve people’s lives.”
