Nominations wanted for Newcastle Sports Awards

SUPPORTERS and enthusiasts are being urged to name their local heroes young and old, as Newcastle prepares for a month-long celebration of sport.

The Council wants nominations to help recognise the sporting achievements and outstanding contributions of teams and individuals throughout the Borough during the past year.

Nominations close on 7 April and the winners will be honoured through the Newcastle Sports Awards during a special ceremony at Keele Hall on Wednesday 31 May 2017.

The awards evening is the culmination of the Borough’s Festival of Sport, which runs throughout May and is aimed at encouraging people to get involved in Newcastle’s wide range of sporting clubs’ events and activities.

Cllr Amelia Rout, Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “Newcastle has a proud history of producing great sportspeople, and the awards ceremony has become an established annual fixture to celebrate the dedication, determination and devotion of our local champions.

“But taking part in sport isn’t just about achieving and winning; the benefits for people’s health, well-being and quality of life are every bit as important, too, which is what our Festival of Sport is all about.”

During May, the Council will be promoting a full activities calendar of events, taster sessions and open days that local sports clubs and organisations will be holding.
