Did you know?
Business and trade waste includes any waste that comes from a commercial activity - including any you run at home.
Businesses have a legal duty of care to deal with their waste responsibly, and their waste must not be taken home for disposal or recycling or put into household bins.
Business waste is accepted with some charges at the Leycett household waste recycling centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
New recycling regulations from 2025
Until recently, the law did not require a business to recycle, it was a choice.
Now the law is changing. From 31 March 2025, business premises must arrange to have all glass, cans, plastic, paper and card and food waste collected for recycling. If a business meets the HMRC definition of a 'micro-business' the requirement is deferred until 31 March 2027.
