Food Hygiene Rating Scheme

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council launched the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme in 2011.  The schemes help consumers choose where to eat out or shop for food by giving them information about the hygiene standards in restaurants, cafés, takeaways, hotels and food shops.

Based on the findings at the time of an inspection a premises can be awarded one of the following ratings and they will be sent a window sticker to display at their premises:

0 – Urgent improvement necessary
1 – Major improvement necessary
2 – Improvement necessary
3 – Generally satisfactory
4 – Good
5 – Very good

Details of how a score is calculated can be found on the Food Standards Agency website

As well as providing up to date information about food hygiene standards to the public, the scheme also helps encourage food businesses to improve hygiene standards.

You can search for information about hygiene standards for restaurants, takeaways and food shops within the Newcastle-under-Lyme area and areas throughout the UK at the Food Standards Agency website- Food hygiene ratings
