Shared Apprenticeship Opportunities

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is committed to increasing the number of employment opportunities for young local people, enabling them to gain valuable work experience and a qualification as well as earning a wage.

The Council’s Shared Apprenticeship Scheme gives apprentices the opportunity to work with more than one employer, offering a wider range of relevant work experience and skills by sharing 'on the job' experiences from different employers.

Apprentices will be employed on a fixed-term contract for a period of between one to three years depending on career/ qualification choice. The duration of the placement will be no less than a three-month period with each partner organisation.  The majority of learning will take place in the workplace with one day per week ‘off-the-job’ training being delivered by one of the Council’s designated training providers.

The apprentices will work 37 hours per week and will be entitled to 23 days annual leave plus statutory holidays (pro rata).  The working pattern will usually be Monday to Friday with various working hours dependent on the role.

Due to funding requirements there will be age restrictions on the roles.

The apprenticeship rate of pay will be paid. This is currently set at £3.70 per hour for the first year, rising to the national minimum wage if the apprentice is aged 19 or over and has completed 12 months’ service.

All apprentices taking part in the scheme will be entitled to apply for any vacancies at the Council and the participating partner organisations at the end of their fixed-term contract.

This is potentially a shared scheme working with other organisations and partnerships.  If you are an employer and you would be interested in sharing an apprenticeship with us, please contact Human Resources on 01782 742265 or 01782 742266 (24 hours) or email us at humanresources@newcastle-staffs.gov.uk
