The electoral register and the 'open register'

We are legally required to keep two registers - the electoral register and the open register. You may also know the open register as the 'edited register'.

The electoral register

The electoral register lists names and addresses of everyone registered to vote in public elections. This register is used for electoral purposes, such as making sure only eligible people can vote. It's also used for other limited purposes specified in law, such as:

  • detecting crime (for example, fraud)
  • calling people for jury service
  • checking credit applications

The open register

The open register is an extract of the electoral register, but isn't used for elections. It can purchased by any person, company or organisation. For example, it's used by businesses and charities to confirm name and address details.

Your name and address will automatically be included in the open register unless you ask for them to be removed. Removing your details from the open register does not affect your right to vote or obtain credit.

The open register is available for sale in either paper or data format and charges are made per 1,000 electors or part thereof. Anyone wishing to purchase the open register should contact us to obtain a quote for the area(s) they wish to purchase.
