Salary

Grade 7 - £27,344 to £29,439 per annum.

Hours

37 hours per week.

Contract

Permanent.

Location

Based at our depot on Knutton Lane in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

About the job

You will be dynamic, enthusiastic, organised and well-motivated, with a sound knowledge of the issues, legislative picture, and aware of forthcoming changes – and you’ll be full of ideas, too.  We deliver excellent services and set high standards for delivery, and you’ll be qualified to at least degree standard (or an equivalent) in a relevant subject, and have an eagerness to pursue additional training, skills and challenges.  You’ll need to have a current valid driving license, experience of training, good skills with Microsoft packages, and ideally knowledge of our Borough.  A keen interest in communication and research are a must, and the ability to function and focus in a dynamic working environment.  As a team player you’ll be able to build relationships across the Council, and with partners and the residential and commercial communities.

You’ll be working with our Recycling and Waste Services operational team to support and deliver some aspects of domestic services like recycling, food waste, garden waste and household rubbish, with a focus on reducing contamination, reducing waste arisings, and embedding knowledge.  You’ll also help to create and deliver aspects of our future commercial services, as we refocus our commercial waste service to match the domestic services – and you’ll see that as an exciting challenge.  Our Net Zero Roadmap will need you to be able to lead on embedding climate change and net zero issues and promote good environmental practice.  Creating reports and collating data against the Roadmap will also be a key element of the role.

We know that optimising the use of frontline services, and sustainability best practice, are the future, and the investment of ‘Green Skills’ at the Council is key to achieving our targets.  The culture here is all about getting the best out of our team by providing a range of benefits to everyone.  These benefits include a great pension, staff offers and discounts, support for time out volunteering and a working environment which values everyone. We offer training to progress careers and learn more skills, all in exchange for working in the local community and make a positive impact every day.  We expect good teamwork, and focus on being accountable, respectful of everybody, and achieving our goals.

Why work for us?

Newcastle-under-Lyme is on the up!  We’ve already started our transformation, however, we still need to find better ways of doing things because we are determined to do the very best we can for our communities.

If our vision is to be the best, then we need the best people working for us. Our people are at the heart of what we do and have the freedom to innovate, grow and develop.  We recruit people who share our vision and values; people who have the drive to deliver our ambitious Council plan.

Our historic Borough is a place of marked contrasts. We are the home of a world class University at Keele, a leading light known internationally for its research and sustainability record, which stands side by side with former mining communities including some which register amongst the most deprived areas in the country. Our Borough is also a mixture of urban centres, affected by some of the same social issues facing our neighbouring city, Stoke-on-Trent, but also outstanding rural landscapes in our less populated villages. Our plans and priorities aim to address the needs of all our communities.

Our People Offer

We reward our people with a competitive range of benefits including; access to the local government pension scheme, minimum 23 days annual leave and 5 extra days after 5 years' service, flexible working and family friendly policies, local and national high street discounts, green travel scheme including cycle to work scheme and electric car salary sacrifice, free employee 24 hour employee assistance and counselling services, flu vaccination service and health checks plus development and training opportunities.
