About the Town Deal - Kidsgrove
Kidsgrove activity 2026, the story so far...
The Town Deal
Using government funding, The Kidsgrove Town Deal Board (KTDB) developed a town centre investment plan (TIP) which included major projects for transforming the area, to stimulate and deliver beneficial outcomes for the local communities, including:
- Economic (commercial and employment)
- Social and Wellbeing (services and amenities)
- Environmental (greener, cleaner, sustainable)
The TIP was approved by government in 2021 with an offer of £16.9 million to deliver the objectives outlined in the TIP. An additional £750,000 was received in 2020 to kickstart activities. This was used to find strip out work on the sports centre, adjacent courts and pitches for community use, improvements to Clough Hall Park and the pump Track on Newchapel recreation ground.

Kidsgrove Sports Centre
Re-opening Kidsgrove Sports Centre was an investment of over £7 million provided by Kidsgrove Town Deal and Newcastle Borough Council. This was used to refurbish the building and modernise facilities to enable Kidsgrove Sports Centre CIO to take on management of the Centre. The Sports Centre was handed over to the CIO in July 2022 and celibrated its 4th anniversary in July 2026.
Since first opening its doors, the Centre has grown its swimming lesson program; increased the number of staff completing teacher qualifications; increased gym membership and sports hall activities; seen growth in clubs using the space for practice sessions, including winter training. Barclays have a community bank operating three days per week in the centre. Estimate of users is about 18,000 per month.
Figures supplied by Kidsgrove Sports Centre CIO.
Chatterley Valley West
Town Deal funding was used specifically to cover the cost of providing new site access and re-siting a Severn Trent water main. The Town Deal funded element is now complete. This means that all the other planned developments area can now take place. Chatterley Park will drive economic growth reinforcing our reputation as a logistics hub and a centre of manufacturing excellence.
Once completed, the 1.2 million sq ft development is expected to support up to 1,700 jobs, providing a significant boost to economic activity, skills and job density in the local area. Design and build opportunities are available from 25,000 to 518,000 sq ft. The site is well located to service the major markets of the Midlands, North West, and Wales.

Canal enhancements
Town Deal funding was used to improve the canal corridor from the Harecastle Tunnel portal to the locks. This focussed on repairing and resurfacing the towpath; stabilising the canal bank with new metal pilings; installing new directional signage; resurfacing the path from The Avenue to the tunnel keepers’ office; removing overgrown trees and vegetation; installing solar lighting into the towpath; improving access points from the station. These improvements have helped to ensure the canal is more accessible and can be enjoyed by the whole community and visitors.
Further works which are planned or already underway include; limewashing the entrance to the Brindley tunnel to (how it would have been finished when it first opened in 1776); planting of native wildflowers in the pond to attract wildlife; erecting a new interpretation board to tell the story of Harecastle tunnel and the Trent & Mersey canal (which is 250 years old in 2027).
