Kidsgrove Town Deal project: Chatterley Valley

The Town Investment Plan for Kidsgrove has three objectives to help drive regeneration in the area.

The Chatterley Valley West project sits under objective 1 - to drive growth and opportunity through enhanced enterprise infrastructure in Kidsgrove.

This development site is the only area in Kidsgrove (and in Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough) available for building a new business park. Once developed, the 38-hectare site should drive investment into Kidsgrove and generate 1,700 jobs and £72 million GVA per annum.

Because of the area’s coal mining heritage, the ground conditions are poor. This means that there are high upfront costs to develop the site. Town Deal funding will help to provide site access and associated water main diversions to ease future development.

Before any funding could be released, The Town Deal Board had to submit a business case to the government. This was to ensure that the project represented good value for money and could be delivered on time. The business case was submitted and approved by government. The Town Deal contribution of £3.49m is funding one important element of a much larger project. It will open up the site for a major development which will provide around 1700 high quality jobs for local people.

Moving forward

In August 2022 a Town Deal grant funding agreement was signed between ourselves and Harworth Estates Investment Limited. This will create a new access to the Chatterley Valley site and also improve connections with Talke roundabout. Completion of the Town Deal funded part of the work is due in mid-2023. The works are the start of a wider programme to develop the Chatterley Valley site, which forms a part of the Ceramics Valley Enterprise Zone. An estimated £64 million private and public investment is planned to fully develop the site.
