Current project: caring for our historic street scene
The historic street scene on our first floor is our most popular gallery. Visitors can travel back to Victorian Newcastle and visit shops like Mellard’s ironmongers and Dale’s Chemists. We’ve been listening to all your ideas to make it even better - whilst keeping the historic character everyone loves. Our museum supporters are now raising funds for:
- improving access so we can open the shops with costumed interpreters for special events
- carrying out urgent repairs and conservation for the old objects and paintings
- new and improved shop displays
- recording local people’s memories to create an audio tour
- adding moving images and sounds to bring the shops to life
- toys and historic replicas children can touch
- vibrant activities to get up close with Newcastle’s history
