Dive deep into the past on Thursday, with a study of Newcastle’s ancient history.

Newcastle-under-Lyme has just celebrated the 850th anniversary of the granting of its first Royal Charter in 1173, but what came before that?

Dr Philip Morgan will be at the Brampton museum, looking back to Newcastle’s origins, the effect of the Norman conquest and why one of the grandest castles of its day sprung up in this part of the North Midlands.

The respected academic will be speaking at 2pm in the Chris Malkin Memorial Lecture 2024, honouring the former borough councillor’s memory as a passionate champion of Newcastle’s heritage.

Simon Tagg, Leader of Newcastle-under-Borough Council, said:

Chris Malkin was a strong advocate of Newcastle’s culture and history: serving as a friend of the Guildhall, High Constable for the Mayor and the ceremonial role of Macebearer, as well as being a councillor at the Borough Council.

We instigated the annual lecture not only to celebrate his memory, but as a way of maintaining interest in our shared heritage.

Although we have just finished celebrating the 850th anniversary of our first Royal Charter, Newcastle was already a town growing in Norman England when it was granted.”

Dr Philip Morgan, who is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and has taught at Universities in the UK and USA.
