Council reacts to Government White Paper on English Devolution

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council’s Leader Simon Tagg has reacted to publication of the Government’s White Paper on English Devolution.
He said:
The Borough Council has been working with its partners across Staffordshire to develop a devolution offer that reflects the successful model of partnership working we have in our county, based on the existing local authority boundaries.
We will take time to understand the detail of the Government’s approach. We have previously stated strongly that merging councils via unitisation and imposing elected mayors are not part of our devolution model.”
Cllr Tagg added:
Over the last three years in Newcastle-under-Lyme our ‘One Council’ improvement programme has produced £1.173 million of savings every year, which means we can continue to focus on front line services that matter to our residents while keeping council tax low.
We are delivering once-in-a-generation regeneration in our towns and holding the operators of Walley Quarry to account on behalf of the residents of the Borough.
We will continue to deliver important local services to our community and take great pride in the work we do on behalf of a Borough with more than 850 years of proud history.”
