A long-term scheme designed to boost people’s pride in their local neighbourhoods is focusing on three different villages next week.

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is bringing its successful Civic Pride initiative to Keele, Madeley and Betley in partnership with Staffordshire Police and Aspire Housing – and residents are encouraged to play their part.

The ongoing campaign – delivered under a unified #PrideInNUL badge – combines new and existing service provision and aims to strengthen the borough’s reputation as a place which is clean, safe and friendly.

There are various activities taking place at Keele on Wednesday, 24 September. As well as a litter pick in the village, starting at Knights Croft from 10am, there is a drop-in session at The Sneyd Arms car park, from 10am to 2pm, where visitors can get information and advice from the council and police about a range of subjects.

On the same day, the council’s Green and environment/sustainability teams are based at Keele University Students’ Union, during Freshers’ Week, where they will talk about carbon neutrality, recycling and how to get involved in Civic Pride and the council’s other community projects. The council and police are also staffing a community safety stall on Monday, 22 September as part of the “safer” element of Civic Pride, engaging students who have come to the borough to study.

Council Leader Simon Tagg said:

We’re pleased to launch these new Civic Pride events as a celebration of everything that makes Newcastle-under-Lyme such a special place to live, work and visit. It’s a great opportunity for communities to come together, take pride in where they live, and help shape a cleaner, greener, safer and more welcoming environment for everyone. We look forward to seeing residents, students, businesses and community groups join us in making a real and lasting difference.”

Meanwhile, litter picking, dog fouling patrols and community engagement are planned in the Morningside and Madeley Pool areas of Madeley and East Lawns part of Betley, working with Betley Parish Council, from 10am to 2pm on Thursday, 25 September.

The next Civic Pride event takes place in Maer and Whitmore on Wednesday, 15 October.
