Demolition begins of former Civic Offices

Passers-by and motorists on the ring-road in Newcastle-under-Lyme may witness a significant moment in the regeneration of the town centre this week as the former Civic Offices building is being demolished.

The demolition will happen in four phases, the first three will be the visible building itself and the final phase the removal of the basement. Demolition dust will be controlled with the use of water misting.

The Leader of the Council, Simon Tagg, said: “This is a huge step forward in the regeneration of the Ryecroft site and also in the overall redevelopment plans for the town centre.

“The landscape we have all been used to in the town centre is going to change so much over the coming months and the next few years, it will be really exciting to see.”

Work began earlier this year on preparation for the demolition of the building as part of the redevelopment of the Ryecroft site which will eventually boast new open public spaces, modern retail, superb town centre living opportunities, the brand new headquarters for Aspire and plans for the York Place area that will link the new development to the rest of the town centre.
