Civic Pride comes to Maer and Whitmore

A campaign encouraging residents to play their part in creating a cleaner, safer and friendlier borough is focusing on a new area.
Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council – working in collaboration with Aspire Housing and Staffordshire Police – is bringing its popular Civic Pride scheme to Maer and Whitmore on Wednesday, 15 October.
The long-term programme brings together partners, community groups and others to make a positive difference across Newcastle-under-Lyme by celebrating local identity, fostering a deeper sense of belonging and encouraging residents to take active roles in improving the quality and spirit of where they live.
A community litter pick is taking place in Baldwins Gate and Whitmore, from 10am, with everyone meeting at Whitmore Village Hall.
Officers from the council, police and Aspire Housing are staffing a drop-in session on the village hall’s car park, from 10am to 2pm, where visitors can get information and advice about a range of subjects.
Meanwhile, in Maer, road sweepers will be out in action and a ranger is carrying out fly-tipping patrols.
Council Leader Simon Tagg said:
Civic Pride was launched in response to concerns expressed by residents about safety and cleanliness in the borough. It captures a lot of work that already goes on by partners, under a unified #PrideinNUL badge, and is also a call to arms for everyone – young and old – to play their part.
As we come up to the first anniversary of Civic Pride, it’s good to reflect on how the campaign has developed, and improved, over time. This is an opportunity for residents in Maer and Whitmore to help make a positive impact on where they live for the benefit of everyone around them.”
The council’s complementary Civic Pride Investment Fund – containing £22,000 for 2025/26 – is now accepting grant submissions for the third round of funding. Applications can be submitted online, where supporting information is also available, until Friday, 5 December.
