Safe Space provides a haven over Christmas and New Year
Newcastle’s late-night town centre ‘safe space’ will be open on key nights for the festive period.
The ‘Safe Space’ will be open in the Lancaster Building, opposite Caffe Nero on the Ironmarket, on Friday 19 December, Saturday 20 December, and then both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
Medical staff will be there from 9pm to 2am, while the taxi marshals will be on stand-by between 11pm and 4am. Additional volunteers will also be helping on 19 December.
Gill Heesom, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council's Cabinet member for Community Safety and Wellbeing, said:
We want people to have a safe night out in our town centre, and we work closely with the police and businesses to help that happen.
The volunteers, medical staff and taxi marshals are there for anyone who needs a helping hand, whether it’s a drink of water, recharging their phone, or being reconnected with friends.”
The Safe Space, which has been open since March 2022, complements improved street lighting and CCTV, along with clearly identified collection areas for taxis.
