Special Christmas market set to feature festive films this Sunday

Two festive films are being shown alongside a special Christmas market event in Newcastle town centre this Sunday, 21 December.

Family favourite Elf starts at 10.30am and is followed by Polar Express at 1pm. Some seating will be available but people can bring their own chairs too.

Running from 10am to 3pm, Castle Artisan Market showcases the very best of local makers, bakers and creators. The market will include numerous attractions including hot food stalls, a bar, free crafts and a visit from Santa and his Elves between 11am and 2pm.

The new town centre screen was installed by Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council as part of a wider investment in its markets, financed by the Future High Streets Fund, to lay further foundations for a modern, welcoming and successful town centre experience.

The event also forms part of ongoing collaborative work between the council and Newcastle-under-Lyme Business Improvement District (BID) to deliver free, accessible events in the town centre that attract local residents, increase footfall and support town centre businesses. Recent joint initiatives have included Castle Summer Fest and Castle Rewind.

As well as space for temporary pitches, the remodelled market area also features attractive landscaping, street furniture and new “nipper” bays where motorists can park for short visits to local shops and services.

Cllr. Stephen Sweeney, deputy leader and Cabinet member for Finance, Town Centres and Growth, said:

We hope families from across the borough can come along to Sunday’s event for a host of festive fun and enjoy the two films being screened in the town centre. It’s going to be a busy weekend and we hope that as well as residents having a great time at the beginning of the holiday period, businesses will get a boost too. Our aim is to create a vibrant and welcoming town centre where people want to spend more of their time – not just at Christmas but all year round. We look forward to announcing future events into the new year.”

Charlotte Pearce, Manager at Newcastle-under-Lyme BID, said:

Free, family-friendly events like this are really important for bringing people into the town centre, encouraging them to spend time here and supporting our local businesses. Working collaboratively with the borough council allows us to deliver events that create a great atmosphere in the town, boost footfall and give people even more reasons to visit Newcastle-under-Lyme.”
