A vital service provided by Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council which supports people facing financial challenges is set to continue.

The borough council recognises that with the current economic climate that includes rising inflation, increased utility costs and more residents experiencing fuel poverty, the Financial Wellbeing and Debt Advice Service is a much-needed asset to the community.

Delivered by Citizens Advice Staffordshire North & Stoke-on-Trent, the service provides accessible support through online resources, telephone, and face-to-face appointments in Newcastle-under-Lyme and Kidsgrove.

With a focus on early intervention, it helps prevent the escalation of financial difficulties – including the risk of homelessness – and works closely with Newcastle Housing Advice for referrals.

Recent data shows that nearly 20 per cent of borough households live in fuel poverty, while 14 per cent show strong indications of needing debt advice such as being behind on priority bills or using credit for essentials.

The borough council is now set to approve a six-month extension to the current contract to ensure uninterrupted support during the procurement period, with a new three-year contract valued at £70,000 per annum.

Cllr. Gill Heesom, Cabinet member for Community Safety and Well-being, said:

As a borough council we recognise the challenges many residents face due to cost-of-living pressures; and it remains a priority to us to support them in any way we can.

It’s as important as ever then that our residents have access to expert, locally delivered financial advice. By continuing this service, we are helping people manage their finances, avoid crisis, and improve their overall well-being. This is a clear demonstration of our commitment to supporting our communities in day to day living.”
