Ground-breaking redevelopment in the centre of Newcastle-under-Lyme will be the subject of national focus tomorrow.

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council will be joining renowned developers Capital&Centric (C&C) at the Houses of Parliament to showcase the redevelopment of the former Midway car park.

The 1960s structure is being converted in to 110 new apartments with shared facilities including a gym – the first time such a conversion has happened in Europe.

Simon Tagg, Leader of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, said:

The Borough Council and Capital&Centric are working closely together at the Ryecroft, Astley Place and the Midway to transform the centre of Newcastle-under-Lyme.

These projects will create hundreds of homes and add to the town centre’s vitality.

I’m delighted that this imaginative alternative to simply demolishing the unwanted Midway car park is being showcased at the Houses of Parliament so that the rest of the country can see the innovative thinking happening here.

Not only are we saving thousands of tonnes of embodied carbon by avoiding demolition, but also preserving the unique character of our town’s skyline while reinventing its purpose.”

Work is now underway on all three town centre sites.

At The Ryecroft, respected developer Capital&Centric will build around 130 apartments in three units, with landscaping, while other parts of the site are earmarked for other developments including an aparthotel.

Work is already underway at the former York Place site, now renamed Astley Place, where C&C is retaining the original shopping centre structure and repurposing it into apartments with ground-floor retail and leisure space. This marks a UK first.

That project will create more accommodation and commercial space, while opening the area between Merrial Street and Ironmarket, around the Old Bulls Head pub, where owner Joule’s Brewery plans to create a live music venue.
