Essential repair work continues at J2

Essential repairs to the roof above the main swimming pool at Jubilee 2 leisure centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme are progressing – preventing further damage and protecting it for years to come.

The work is needed due to the corrosion of the underside of the roof, which following initial investigation is more extensive than had been anticipated. Specialist contractors will be needed to ensure these works are completed effectively and as quickly as possible in the spring.

The main swimming pool is temporarily closed to ensure people’s safety and unfortunately this closure will need to be extended due to the complexity of the repairs. Members and customers are being kept up to date with progress and the opening date.

The small pool will remain open for the duration of the scheme and have extended hours – with adults and school swimming lessons included. People are being advised to check the revised timetable for the small pool during this works period.

Anyone with full J2 membership with pool access will continue to receive discounts while the main pool is closed.

The maintenance works will ensure the continued provision of high-quality swimming facilities for residents, including children, schools, and local clubs.

Craig Skelding, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council’s portfolio holder for leisure, culture and heritage said:

These works are essential to ensure the long-term safety and quality of our swimming facilities at J2. Unfortunately, the project team has uncovered rust damage that is worse than had been anticipated. This means specialist contractors will be needed to ensure repairs are done as effectively and efficiently as possible.

The temporary closure of the main pool will now need to be extended for which we can only offer our most sincere apologies.

Throughout this period the smaller pool and gym remain unaffected, and every effort has been made to minimise disruption to members and clubs. “A revised timetable remains in place in the smaller pool with extended hours.

We’d again like to apologise for the ongoing disruption and will inform of the date the main pool can reopen as soon as possible.”
