The Reform UK party has won control of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council.

With 23 of the 44 seats needed for a majority, Reform UK won 27 in the May 7 election, compared to the Conservative Party’s 15, and two to Labour.

Turnout across the borough was 47.8 per cent, compared to 43.01 per cent in 2022.

Entering the election the Conservatives had held 26 seats, with 17 for Labour and one for Reform UK.

Martin Rogerson, Reform UK branch chairman for Newcastle-under-Lyme, said:

I would like to thank everyone who made the commitment to stand in this election, and all those who have worked to make it possible.

We are delighted and humbled that people have placed their trust in us and I promise that we will get to work straightaway delivering local services.”

With all the council’s 44 seats contested, ballots were counted overnight at Keele University sports centre. The final position was:

  • Reform UK: 27
  • Conservative: 15
  • Labour, Labour & Co-operative Party: 2

Having taken control of the council in December 2017, the Conservative Party won the all-out election of May 2022 with a majority of six seats.

This time, 165 people stood in the 21 wards, with each ward returning one, two or three councillors depending on their size.

Gordon Mole, Chief Executive of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council and the Returning Officer for the election, said:

The Borough Council is responsible for many things, including overseeing the town centre regeneration, planning, waste collection, maintaining green spaces, providing car parks and monitoring hygiene standards in bars, cafes and restaurants.

These elections across all wards have been contested by multiple candidates and I thank them all for their effort and commitment to the democratic process.”
