Newcastle will have a ceremonial beacon for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations

A ceremonial beacon will be lit as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations tomorrow night, Thursday 2 June, at Apedale Community Country Park, in Newcastle.

The Deputy Lieutenant of Staffordshire, Mrs Julie Arkle, will light the beacon and the Deputy Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Simon White, will be in attendance.

The beacon will be situated adjacent to the Mining Wheel monument at the highest point of the park.

Simon Tagg, the Leader of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, said: “The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is a momentous occasion. None of us will ever again experience our monarch having a 70-year reign. It’s a remarkable achievement and it’s a day to share with family and friends – and even neighbours if you’re having a street party.

“I’m really pleased that we have the Jubilee beacon in Newcastle – to shine a light, along with the many, many others that will be lit across the country for the Queen. Congratulations to Her Royal Majesty from all of us in Newcastle-under-Lyme.”

The short ceremony will follow the official guidance issued by the Royal Family: bagpipe music ‘Diu Regnare’ will be played - this was written especially for this event - and a bugler will play the fanfare ‘Majesty’, to be followed by a choir singing ‘A Life Lived with Grace’.

The borough’s two Town Criers, Gordon Brayford in Newcastle and John Parsons in Kidsgrove, will be informing shoppers about the event on Thursday with the Platinum Jubilee Proclamation – along with Town Criers across the country.

The beacon will be lit at 9.45pm and will be extinguished at 10pm. Apedale Community Country Park is closed to the public at this time but live streaming of the lighting of the beacon will be available on the Council’s Facebook page.
