The community and sustainability
Transport
By reducing the use of fossil fuelled private transportation (individual vehicles) and increasing the use of electric vehicle (EV) and other low carbon vehicles, active travelling (walking/cycling) and public transport (buses/trains) we can reduce the emissions we produce that contribute to the acceleration of climate change.
This increases the borough's air quality, can reduce traffic and noise pollution, and make our roads safer.
Residents
You can:
- car share to get to work
- fly less, or join a carbon off-setting scheme
- use public transport like buses and trains instead of private vehicles or taxis
- go by bike or on foot (active travel) which can also be healthier
- purchase products from local businesses instead of having them shipped in Heavy vehicles from long distance
- work from home once in a while if possible, which reduces transport emissions altogether as you don’t need to travel
Businesses
You can:
- ensure you provide active travel, public transportation and electric vehicle (EV) support to your employees
- procure local products instead of having products shipped from long distance in a heavy vehicle
- allow your employees to have a flexible work week they can work from home if needed to reduce transport use all together
- share car sharing apps with your employees so they may car-share to your business
Visitors
You can:
- aim to use public transportation and active travel when you are in the borough
- if you rent a car for your visit aim to rent an electric vehicle (EV) or hybrid
- aim to use public and low carbon transport to get to the borough if you are visiting, such as trains, buses and carpooling
