Food premises inspections

The purpose of food premises inspections

This is to:

  • identify and prevent risks to public health

  • investigate possible breaches of food hygiene legislation and to take action where necessary to ensure the business is legally compliant

  • offer advice about good food hygiene practices

Officers grade a premises using the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, or 'scores on the doors'.

This is a Food Standards Agency and local authority partnership initiative to provide consumers with at-a-glance information on hygiene standards in food businesses found during planned inspections.

Businesses and customers can search for a rating on the Food Ratings website.
