Council invites partners to join '850' Borough celebrations

Published: 4 August 2022

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council has written to key partners to offer them an opportunity to support a programme of celebratory events planned for the borough next year.

In 1173 Newcastle-under-Lyme was given Royal Charter of Incorporation status, making it a borough. This gave the area a new prominence and, in addition, allowed it to hold markets in the town centre. Next year will be the 850th anniversary of the charter status.

The 850th Anniversary celebrations programme is still in the early planning stages so this is an ideal time for businesses and local organisations to get on board and be part of the plans.

The Leader of the Council, Simon Tagg, said: “We have initially invited partners in the communities across the Borough and beyond who have supported us in the past with events such as the annual Mayor’s Charity Ball but we would welcome enquiries from any business that would like to support us in this landmark event, not only to highlight the borough’s long history but also to leave a legacy for the future”

Deputy Mayor, Simon White, the Council’s Heritage Champion for the 850th celebrations, said: “This is a unique opportunity to be a part of the ‘850’ celebrations, which will be enjoyed by all of our communities, creating new memories for those living in and visiting the borough in 2023.

“We want to celebrate our borough and we’re proud of our history but this isn’t just about the Council, this is for everyone. That is why we are opening up the opportunity for others to be involved. I hope that we will get a really positive response and will look forward to welcoming those who want to join us on board.”

Businesses can show their support in various ways: with financial donations to help fund the planned activities, by helping to raise awareness of the celebrations or by donating ‘in kind’ – for example they may have services that could add value to events or be able to volunteer staff support.

The 850th Anniversary Celebrations support packages on offer range from Bronze (up to £500) to Diamond (over £5,000) with the addition of ‘in-kind’ offers.
