Council garage tests

What happens if the vehicle fails the test?

You will receive a slip from the garage advising you of what to do next and the defects that have been found on your vehicle. You have 28 days to get any defects remedied and return to the garage.

If the defects are small you will be required to have a spot check. If the defect is larger then you will require a retest.  The paperwork given to you by the garage will detail the test you need.

  • Spot check £23
  • Retest  £32

Failure to have the vehicle re-tested in time may mean that the vehicle is no longer eligible for renewal.

If it is under 7 years old and not subject to grandfather rights, you can apply again as a new vehicle.

If it is older than that, it is not suitable to be considered as a new vehicle and therefore will not be eligible.
