FIFA World Cup 2026 advice
Update: We have been made aware by central government that extensions will be available for the 6 July 2026 match until 05:00 hours. The extension is only for premises who are currently licensed for on-sales of alcohol on their premises licence on a Sunday up to at least 22:00 hours. The exemption runs from 22:00hours on 5 July 2026 until 05:00 hours on the 6 July 2026. The details can be found in the Licensing Act 2003 (FIFA World Cup licensing hours) (amendment) order 2026.
Extensions for the World Cup
As you may be aware there are extensions available to some of the England and Scotland matches during the FIFA World Cup this year for premises which are licensed to sell alcohol on the premises up to 23:00 hours on the days of the relevant matches. Where the match is on a day where the opening of the licensed premises is a Sunday then the licensed premises who are eligible may have licensable hours for on sales of alcohol up to 22:00 hours.
The Institute of Licensing along with other industry leaders has produced some guidance to help you to understand when you may benefit from an extension:
There are, however, some matches which do not benefit from the extension and it will depend where England and Scotland place in their groups as to the route that they will take to the next matches.
Below is a list of all the potential matches that they could play in and details of any extensions that apply. If you do not have a licence to sell alcohol on the premises or wish to open outside of these extensions then you will need to give a Temporary Event Notice (TEN). The usual deadlines apply so you will need to allow ten working days for a normal TEN or five for a late TEN not including the day of the match or the day of application.
We are happy to help you with this so please contact licensing@newcastle-staffs.gov.uk as soon as possible if you are unsure.
Potential matches
This table shows the matches that England could play in and the relevant extensions for premises with on-sales of alcohol up to 22:00 (Sundays only) or 23:00 hours on the date of the match.
Please note: further information for the match on 6 July is at the top of this page.
