Following an announcement by Staffordshire County Council, Kidsgrove Sports Centre is due to close as a result of its deteriorating condition and increasing maintenance costs.
The building will close on Friday, 30 June 2017
The decision has been made after a building condition survey revealed at least £2.4 million would need spending on the ageing centre over the next seven years.
The survey indicated that £400,000 will need spending on the centre in the next year alone to repair and maintain it.
Kidsgrove Sports Centre opened in 1976. The building is owned by Staffordshire County Council, but has been subject to a Joint Use Agreement with Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council and King’s School for a number of years. Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council has been providing leisure services from the building, and managed community use at the centre. Now that the new King's School building has opened, complete with new sports hall and related sports facilities, the Kidsgrove building is no longer needed to fulfil their curriculum obligations.
All of these considerations have led to the decision to close the building.
Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is now considering how the health and well-being needs of Kidsgrove’s residents can continue to be met without the sports centre. Alternative arrangements for gym members and children signed up for swimming lessons are also being considered.
Provision in Kidsgrove
Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, as a matter of urgency, is looking at how we can continue to cater for the health and well-being needs of residents in Kidsgrove without having access to this building. We are exploring a number of options and and will keep you informed as we make further progress.
Customers who are current members at Kidsgrove Sports Centre (paid annually or by direct debit) will have their membership honoured at Jubilee2 starting on 1 June 2017, so that members can try the facilities at Jubilee2 before Kidsgrove Sports Centre closes.
The facilities at Jubilee2 include two swimming pools, a 100 station gym, Aqua-Sauna, Climbing Walls and Studios accommodating over 60 Group Exercises Classes each week and inclusive car parking. Current Kidsgrove Members can use Jubilee2 at no extra charge which reflects inconvenience and addition travel costs.
Please speak to a member of staff if you require any further information or if you wish to cancel your membership with us at the end of June 2017.
We are currently in the process of reviewing the capacity to deliver further swimming lessons at Jubilee2. If your child is having swimming lessons at Kidsgrove, we will contact you shortly to discuss the options available to you.
We have started to contact all regular hirers, and will work with them to find suitable alternative accommodation, so that where possible their activities can continue locally.
