WW2 local history: evacuees and air raids (KS2)

WW2 local history

In 1940 bombs were dropped on Chesterton in Newcastle-Under-Lyme, causing fatalities and shocking destruction. Your pupils will find out about this tragic event, by becoming evacuee children living in Chesterton. They will then train to be Air Raid Precaution Wardens, tasked with making Chesterton safer. But beware, the air raid siren could sound at any minute!

This session uses drama to immerse your children in a local history story:

  • explore real WW2 objects from the museum’s collections
  • see local maps and photographs from WW2
  • visit our '1940’s' town to receive ARP warden training
  • take part in an air raid recreation in our cellar

The day was absolutely brilliant! The children were buzzing with facts and were completely wowed by some of the primary sources they could handle and view. We will definitely be returning next year. The Brampton is an incredible local resource and I would highly recommend this trip to any school!
